Muscle

Origin: Anterior superior 1/3 of the surface of sternum and medial 1/2 of clavicle.

Insertion: Crest of the greater tubercle of the Humerus.

Action: Adducts, flexes the arm at the shoulder and medially rotates the Humerus

Monitoring

Position: With elbow held straight flex the arm 90° to point directly forward and slightly to the midline.

Rotation: Medially rotate Humerus.

Stabilise: Anterior opposite shoulder.

Monitor: Apply pressure at the forearm above the wrist to abduct the arm at a 10°angle toward the feet.

ASSOCIATIONS:

Nerve Supply: Lateral and medial pectoral - C5- C7

Visceral Nerves:

Sympathetic: T2, T3, T4

Parasympathetic: Vagus X

Neuro-Lymphatic Reflex:

Anterior: Bilateral between 3rd & 4th, 4th & 5th and 5th & 6th ribs next to sternum.

Posterior: Bilateral 2cm lateral to midline adjacent to T3, T4 & T5.

Neuro-Vascular Reflex: Bregma.
