Muscle

Origin: Anterior surface of transverse processes, lateral border of vertebrae and intervertebral discs from T12 – L5.

Insertion: Lesser trochanter of the femur.

Action: Flexes the hip joint.Assists in flexing the femur with minimal external rotation. With the femur stabilised, assists in flexing the torso as in sitting up from a prone position.

Monitoring

Position: From a supine position flex the femur 30° with 10° abduction

Rotation: Externally rotate the femur.

Stabilise: Opposite side iliac crest.

Monitor: Apply pressure at the anterior medial leg above the ankle toward extension with slight abduction.

Corrections

ASSOCIATIONS:

Nerve Supply: Lumbar plexus - L1, L2, L3, L4.

Visceral Nerves:

Sympathetic: T5-T9

Parasympathetic: Vagus X

Neuro-Lymphatic Reflex:

Anterior: Medial 1/2 of the 5th rib space on the left side for both muscles though occasionally right too.

Posterior: 2cm lateral to midline between T6 & T7 on the left.

Neuro-Vascular Reflex: Bilateral frontal eminences.

Nutrition: Vit. B, betaine hydrochloride.
