Muscle

Origin: Anterior part of groove on lateral condyle offemur, and oblique and oblique popliteal ligament of knee joint.

Insertion: Posterior surface of tibia, and fascia covering the muscle.

Action: Non-weight bearing medially rotates the tibia on the femur and flexes the knee joint. In weight bearing it laterally rotates the femur on the tibia and flexes the knee joint.

Monitoring

Position: Sitting, with knee flexed at right angle and ankle in a neutral position.

Rotation: Medially rotate foot.

Stabilise: Lateral ankle

Monitor: Apply pressure to the medial border of the foot as to rotate the foot laterally.

Corrections

Nerve Supply: Tibial, L4, L5, S 1.

Visceral Nerves:

Sympathetic: L1-L3

Parasympathetic: S2

Neuro-Lymphatic Reflex:

Anterior: Bilateral 2cm from the midline, 2cm superior to the pubic symphysis

Posterior: Bilateral transverse process of L2.

Neuro-Vascular Reflex: Bilateral frontal eminences.
