Location: midline, level with 4th intercostal, between nipples.
Tan is drawn as flesh with a sun inside a storehouse. The sun is symbolic of light and purity. The character Zhong relates to an arrow striking the middle of a target – symbolic of balance, harmony and the middle way. This is a point where both yin and yang, qi and blood mix. It is a point near the heart, and allows us to be nourished by the light and purity of the heart. This nourishment and the mixing of yin and yang, rest and movement, provides a foundation for peace and harmony.
Exercise: Breathe deeply into the belly and expand your chest with each breath. Imagine being in a beautiful forest and taking in the crisp, clear, vibrant air with each breath. As I hold this point become aware of your heart beating in your chest. Imagine that inside your heart is a beautiful light, a light that brings warmth and harmony. Open up and allow this light to infuse the whole upper part of your body, mixing with your breath and providing vibrancy, harmony, peace and joy.
