Origins: Lateral head - lateral condyle and posterior surface of the femur Medial head - popliteal surface of the femur above the medial condyle

Insertion: Posterior surface of the calcaneus

Action: Plantar flexes the foot, flexes leg at the knee

Facilitation Monitoring

Position: lying prone with foot plantar flexed

Rotation: none

Stabilise: under lower tibia

Monitor: place hand on plantar surface of foot and push down to Dorsi flex foot

Inhibition Monitoring

Position: lying prone with foot Dorsi flexed

Rotation: none

Stabilise: on heel

Monitor: place hand on dorsal surface of foot and pull upward to plantar flex foot

Corrections

ASSOCIATIONS:

Nerve Supply: Tibial S1, 2

Visceral Nerves:

Sympathetic: L1-L3

Parasympathetic: S2

Neuro-Lymphatic Reflex:

Anterior: Bilateral 2cm from the midline, 2cm superior to the pubic symphysis

Posterior: Bilateral transverse process of L2.

Neuro-Vascular Reflex: Bilateral frontal eminences.
